Juan Manuel Bonet
Juan Manuel Bonet: H. N. WERKMAN: OBRA IMPRESA 1923 - 1944. Valencia: IVAM Centre Julio Gonzales, 1998. First edition. Text in Spanish and English. Square quarto. Quarter cloth and chipboard: black cloth stamped in white and decorated boards. 167 pp. Color plates and text illustrations. A near fine copy.
8.75 x 9.75 book with 167 pages profusely illustrated with color work samples of Werkman's avant-garde Dutch typography. Includes multiple essays and bibliography. OBRA IMPRESA 1923 - 1944 presents the most extensive published collection of Werkman's typography to date. My highest recommendation.
Dutch designer and printmaker Hendrik Werkman (18821945) is best known for his innovative printing techniques and avant-garde typography. As publisher of De Blauwe Schuitt, a series of underground booklets produced by Jewish dissident poets and writers during the Nazi occupation of Holland, Werkman was imprisoned by German secret police in 1945 and executed without trial just three days before the countryıs liberation. This generously illustrated book is the first in English to focus on Werkmanıs remarkable graphic work and fascinating life.
