Martin Parkan (essay): TSCHECHISCHE AVANTGARDE 1922-1940 [Reflexe Europaischer Kunst und Fotographie in der Buchgestaltung]. Bochum: Rijksmuseum Meermanno-Westreenianum / Museum van het Boek, Den Haag 1992. Second edition of 1000 copies. Exhibition catalogue, Oblong octavo. Text in German. A fine softcover bookwith one lightly scrapped area on front panel.

10.75 x 8.5 softcover book with 208 pages and 424 color and b&w illustrations. The catalogue of the private collection of Czech Avant-garde books of Zdenek Primus, likely the greatest collection of this material extant. The book describes and in many cases illustrates over 400 books from the collection. The presentation of the material is itself informed by the Czech Avant-garde approach to book design. The collection includes works informed by Surrealism, Constructivism and Futurism as well as photography books.

Includes works by Karel Teige, J. Styrsky, J. Capek, V. Obrtil, many others, in book arts and photography. The standard reference on the Czech avant-garde book design.

I am very interested in Avant-Garde Book Design, and this book has many examples that I have never seen before. Enough said.
