PLASTIQUE [PLASTIC] No. 2
Sophie H. Taeuber-Arp (editor)

Sophie H. Taeuber-Arp (editor): PLASTIQUE [PLASTIC]. Paris: S. H. Arp, 1937. Number 2 [Dimensionisme]. Original Edition. Non-parallel texts in English, French and German. A very good magazine in stiff, printed covers with tipped-on label to front panel: green wrappers lightly sunned, otherwise fine. An exceptionally rare journal with an immaculate pedigree.

6.25 x 9.5 saddle-stitched journal with 24 pages of text and b/w reproductions. PLASTIQUE was a short-lived (5 issues, 1937-1939) journal "devoted to the study and appreciation of Abstract Art; its editors are themselves painters and sculptors identified with the modern movement in Europe and America." Sophie H. Taeuber-Arp served as editor, with regular collaborations from Hans Arp, Cesar Domela, A. E. Gallatin and L. K. Morris.

PLASTIQUE No. 2 [Dimensionisme] Contents

  • On demande: Porquoi 391? Qu'est-ce que 391? by Gabrielle Buffet. Includes b/w plates of work by Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Cesar Domela, Clara Friedrich, Max Bill, Viking Eggeling, and Hans Richter.

  • Informations includes a publication notice/review of Jan Tschichold's TYPOGRAPHISCHE GESTALTUNG [Basel: Benno Schwabe, 1935].

An exceptional original snapshot of the international Constructivist and Abstract Art movements that flourished before the start of World War II. My highest recommendation.
