FREDERICK SOMMER AT SEVENTY-FIVE: A RETROSPECTIVE Constance W. Glenn and Jane K. Bledsoe (Editors)
Constance W. Glenn and Jane K. Bledsoe (Editors): FREDERICK SOMMER AT SEVENTY-FIVE: A RETROSPECTIVE. Long Beach, CA: The Art Museum and Galleries, California State University, 1980. First edition (limited to 3,000 copies). A fine softcover book with metallic stiff wrappers: trivial shelf wear. Interior unmarked and very clean. Out-of-print.
9 x 10.5 softcover book with 68 pages and 30 b/w photographs and illustrations and 5 color photographs. Frederick Sommer's work never ceases to take my breath away. His continued interest in experimentation means he set his incredible sights on everything from rotting animal carcasses and chicken parts to landscapes and nudes to Francis Brugiere-inspired paper cut outs and lightscapes. His singular vision lends an astonishing beauty to whatever subject found its way into his viewfinder.
The book's contents include an introduction by Leland Rice, "The Music of Frederick Sommer," "Notes on a Photograph" by Frederick Sommer, a portion from Sommer's collaboration with Stephen Aldrich "The Poetic Logic of Art and Aesthetics," a chronology, an exhibition history, and the contents of this particular exhibit.
