DECORATIVE ART IN MODERN INTERIORS 1978 Maria Schofield (editor)
Maria Schofield (editor): DECORATIVE ART IN MODERN INTERIORS 1978. NYC: The Viking Press (A Studio Book), 1978. First edition. A fine hardcover book bound in full cloth with a fine dustjacket: an immaculate copy. Interior unmarked and very clean. out-of-print.
8.75 x 11.25 hardcover book with 192 pages, numerous black and white illustrations, 90 colour plates of Apartments and Houses, Furniture, Prints, Weaves, Glass, Lights and Tableware, Ceramics, circa 1978. This book was printed in Italy and the color reproduction is truly stunning. The engraving and plates were dead-on perfect for this edition, and all the photographs are printed on quality glossy paper. My highest recommendation.
Every object presented in this edition is identified by its designers and manufacturer/distributor. Dimensions and materials are also noted. The presence of this information makes this an invaluable reference for collectors of modern decorative arts. You have been warned.
This book showcases the Interior Design transition that occurred as people migrated from 1950s organic austerity into the enlightened (and very colorful) 1960s. This volume would be an invaluable resource for anybody attempting to restore a contemporary residential environment.
This volume is also a valuable midcentury resource since it goes through the trouble of identifying both designers and manufacturers of furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, tiles, lamps and accessories. You know what I'm talking about.
From the book: "The fascination of old places with their romantic associations still holds true in 1978, and valued buildings are reprieved from the speculator's bulldozer to be restored with meticulous care. 'Architectural Conservation and Contemporary Living' one of the subjects treated in 'Decorative Art 1978' shows the architect's responses with eighteen interiors that include private homes, offices, shops, banks, hotels, museums and universities from the United States, Japan, Denmark, Norway, England, France, Belgium, Hungary and Italy."
A special feature devoted to 'Instruments for Early Music by Todays Makers,' by Fiona Adamczewski, offers a compact survey of the development of a highly skilled craft that will interest both collectors and music lovers."
The customary review of international trends in furniture, glass, ceramics, fine crafts, focuses on the importance of tradition on contemporary industrial methods of production, and on better training opportunities to benefit the designer/craftsman of tomorrow."
