DECORATIVE ART IN MODERN INTERIORS 1974/75

Maria Schofield (editor): DECORATIVE ART IN MODERN INTERIORS 1974/75. NYC: The Viking Press (A Studio Book), 1974. First edition. A fine hardcover book bound in full cloth with a fine dustjacket: an immaculate copy. Interior unmarked and very clean. out-of-print.

8.75 x 11.25 hardcover book with 176 pages and 272 images of Apartments and Houses, Furniture, Prints, Weaves, Glass, Lights and Tableware, Ceramics, circa 1974. This book was printed in England and the color reproduction is truly stunning. The engraving and plates were dead-on perfect for this edition, and all the photographs are printed on quality glossy paper. My highest recommendation.

Every object presented in this edition is identified by its designers and manufacturer/distributor. Dimensions and materials are also noted. The presence of this information makes this an invaluable reference for collectors of modern decorative arts. You have been warned.

This book showcases the Interior Design transition that occurred as people migrated from 1950s organic austerity into the enlightened (and very colorful) 1960s. This volume would be an invaluable resource for anybody attempting to restore a contemporary residential environment.

This volume is also a valuable midcentury resource since it goes through the trouble of identifying both designers and manufacturers of furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, tiles, lamps and accessories. You know what I'm talking about.

From the book: "As commercial buildings crowd the centers of our cities, intermingling with residential structures and overlapping their functions, we become increasingly aware of the extent to which design intimately influences the quality of our lives."

Decorative Art takes note of this situation by expanding its outlook to include shops, offices, and showrooms (where the eminently practical may also be beautiful). We are invited to look at the magical conversion of a narrow town house into a home of calm and serene atmosphere, to examine the highly original ideas used by professional designers in their own homes, and to see how individuality has been brought to the surface in a community created within the heart of a great city."

The designing of glass both as an art form and for making objects of utility, and as it is practiced in America, Sweden, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Japan, is the subject of a special article by Michael Robinson. The traditional review of craft and industrial production places an accent on the latest international trends in furniture, lighting, textiles and ceramics."

A meeting ground for the expression of varied tendencies found throughout the design world. Decorative Art reflects the changes that move and inspire furnishing style and design innovation, thus providing an invaluable guide for specialist and layman alike. "
