WORLD AND DWELLING

Richard Neutra

Richard Neutra: WORLD AND DWELLING. New York: Universe Books, 1962. First English-language edition. Folio. Blue cloth stamped in white. 160 pp. Black and white plates and plans. Photographically printed dust jacket [from German publisher Alexander Koch]. Cloth lightly worn and soiled, esp. rear panel. Scattered foxing early and late. Jacket very nice indeed with only a couple of tiny chips. Cover photograph by Julius Shulman. A very good or better copy of this uncommon edition.

8.5 x 12 hardcover book with 160 pages of with b/w plates and plans of Neutrašs residential architecture, all finely printed in Germany. Principal photography by Julius Shulman. American photographer Julius Shulman's images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. A book on modern architecture without Shulman is inconceivable. Some of his architectural photographs, like the iconic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright's or Pierre Koenig's remarkable structures, have been published countless times. The brilliance of buildings like those by Charles Eames, as well as those of his close friend, Richard Neutra, was first brought to light by Shulman's photography.

An early and comprehensive Neutra monograph. Uncommon.

Born and raised in Vienna, Richard Neutra (1872-1970) came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. Neutra's ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs him recognition as one of Modernist architecture's greatest talents.
