PRINT April-May 1957
Nanci Lyman (Editor): PRINT: AMERICA'S GRAPHIC DESIGN MAGAZINE. NYC:
William Edwin Rudge, Volume 11, Number 2, April-May 1957. A near-fine
original magazine with mild cover wear. Interior unmarked and very clean.
Cover design by Rudolph de Harak.
8.5 x 11 face-stitched magazine with 74 pages of editorial content and
advertising. Print was devoted to showcasing the best in American Graphic
Design, circa 1957. For this goal, the Publishers used a wide variety of
paper stocks and printing styles for each issue. Print from the mid-to-late
1950s remind me of Herbert Spencer's Typographica, but without the cultural
pretensions of the English magazine. Print was meat and potatoes compared
to Spencer's elegant souffles.
Contents for this vintage issue of Print magazine include:
- top drawer: the art director as seen by Boris Artzybasheff
- 12 swiss designers: stunning 24-page insert (with cover designed by
Armin Hoffmann) featuring the work of Josef Muller-Brockmann, Adolph
Flukiger, karl Gerstner, Armin Hoffmann, Gottfried Honegger, Richard Lohse,
Hans Neuberg, Siegfried Odermatt, Emil Ruder, Nelly Rudin, Max Schmid, and
Carlo Vivarelli
- personality in print: Irving Miller
- AIGA exhibit : packaging design and record covers! Designs by
paul Rand, lester Beall, Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Saul Bass, etc.
- Mimeo-imagery: Rudolph de Harak.
