MODERN PUBLICITY 1932
Frank Mercer and W. Gaunt (editors)
Frank Mercer and W. Gaunt (editors): MODERN PUBLICITY 1932 [Commercial Art Annual]. London and NYC: The Studio Ltd. and The Studio Publications, Inc., 1932. Original edition. Introduction in English, French, and German. A good softcover book with a rough spine, the cover slightly worn and soiled, and the front hinge starting. Interior unmarked and very clean. Out-of-print.
8 x 11.5 softcover unpaginated book with approx. 350 illustrations, 37 in two-color and 8 in full-color. 1932 Modern Publicity still contains traces of more traditional early-twentieth century design. However, the Modern Art Deco influence prevails not only in the bookıs overall style and content, but in its vintage trade advertisements. Beautiful.
From the introduction: "The limitation of means produced by economic pressure has tended to increase the importance of lay-out: a design no longer stands entirely alone, but every effort is made by the best practitioners of advertising so to dispose type and design as to obtain the maximum effect simply from arrangement. In this connection the volume by A. Tolmer, "Mise en Page: The Theory and Practice of Lay-out," has had a decisive influence and may justly be regarded as epoch-making."
