DAYS OFF: A CALENDAR OF HAPPENINGS
Allan Kaprow
Allan Kaprow: DAYS OFF: A CALENDAR OF HAPPENINGS. NYC: Commissioned by the Junior Council of The Museum of Modern Art, 1970. First edition. Side-stapled folio. Printed newsprint self-wrappers. Calendar-style document with the usual age toning. First two leaves mildly stained, light chipping to edges of front and back cover. A good example of a document not meant to survive into the 21st century.
10.75 x 15.25 calendar with 64 pages and numerous b/w photographs and illustrations. Cover photo by Peter Moore, some interior photos by Dennis Hopper. Who would of thought something as conceptual and thought-provoking would get boiled down to "What's happening?" No one can blame Mr. Kaprow for distancing himself from "happenings" in his later career. His profound influence on art surely trumps his contribution to popular culture.
Allan Kaprow (19272006) pioneered performance and installation art by developing the "Environment" and "Happening" in the late 1950s and 1960s. His "Happenings" gained such popular credence that he shifted his practice into what he called "Activities," pieces for one or several players devoted to examining everyday behaviors and habits and nearly indistinguishable from ordinary life.
