A fine hardcover book bound in full cloth with a very good dust jacket: the yellow DJ is lightly sunned on the spine and shows some smudging on both panels. Spine ends and rear panel are lightly chipped. Overall, a superior copy of this oversized volume. Book design by Peter Ray, FSIA. TheSociety of Industrial Artists pulled out all the stops for this edition to commemmorate the 1951 Festival of Britain.

9.25 x 12 hardcover book with 308 pages and nearly 800 b/w illustrations (mostly photos), 29 b/w illustrations in the text; 58 pages of advertisements; indices to designers, clients and advertisements. Also contains two historical essays: "A Century of Commercial Art" by Milner Gray, and "A Century of Industrial Design and Designers" by Nikolaus Pevsner. Surveys the full range of contemporary British design (exhibitions, display, packaging, graphic design, advertising, posters, illustration, book design, industrial and pattern design.

From the book: "When the Society of Industrial Artists and the publishers of Designers In Britain launched the first volume of this work, they clearly felt that after a two-year interal it would be reasonable for them to look for an adequate crop of good new designs for each succeeding volume.

The second volume, published in 1949, proved the wisdom of this decision. With the publication of this new volume, the third in the series, they may fairly claim to have established Designers In Britain as one of those standard works of reference on which people come to look as an indispensable part of their professional equipment. Designers In Britain has come to stay.

As in previous years, quality of design has been the only criterion; the work of any British designer, whether a member of the Society of not, is eligible for consideration. The Society has, however, made a rule not to include anonymous works; the title of the book indeed makes such a rule inevitable." Contents
