ARCHITECTURAL DETAILING
Caleb Hornbostel and Elmer A. Bennett

Caleb Hornbostel and Elmer A. Bennett: ARCHITECTURAL DETAILING. NYC: Reinhold Publishing, 1952. First edition. A near-fine hardcover book in a very good dust jacket: DJ lightly worn and chipped to edges. A surprisingly uncommon book in the 1952 first edition state.

9 x 11.75 hardcover book with 22 pages and 165 selected architectural details from Progressive Architecture magazine represented by both photographs and diagrams. An amazing book, if thatıs the kind of thing youıre into.

From the book: ³This book represents an annotated, cross-indexed, and organized collection of 165 of the selected architectural details that have for many years been the most popular feature of Progressive Architecture. The beautiful drawings are the work of Elmer Bennett of the P/A staff and were prepared from material collected by Caleb Hornbostel, his co-author. The book is organized for easy reference into two parts. The first is a collection of details inherent to particular building types.. The second group are details inherent to many types of buildings -- such as fireplaces, doors, windows, etc. Mr. Hornbostel has written an introduction to each of the fourteen chapters explaining the general problems involved in designing each particular type of detail, and a concise description of the specific problem solved by each detail in the book as well as the reasons for its having been chosen. In addition each chapter includes a series of cross references to related details elsewhere in the book, and there is a complete general index as well.

The details shown in the book were chosen from various parts of the country to indicate solutions to the same problem under different climate conditions. The key photograph with each detail was carefully chosen to show the architectural effect of the entity of which the detail is a part. Included in each drawing in addition to plans, elevatrions, and sections as required, are blow-ups of any particularly complicated areas.

The amusingly philosophical introduction for this book was written by Richard J. Neutra. Some of Mr. Neutra's own excellent architectural details, naturally, appear in the book.
