AXIS No. 4 A QUARTERLY REVIEW OF CONTEMPORARY "ABSTRACT" PAINTING AND SCULPTURE Myfanwy Evans (editor)
Myfanwy Evans (editor): AXIS No. 4. A QUARTERLY REVIEW OF CONTEMPORARY "ABSTRACT" PAINTING AND SCULPTURE. Henley-on-Thames [Fawley Bottom Farm-House]: Myfanwy Evans, 1935. No. 4, November 1935. Original edition. A very good magazine in stiff wrappers printed in two colors: wrappers lightly worn and discolored, interior fine. An exceptionally rare journal with an immaculate pedigree.
8.5 x 10.75 perfect-bound magazine with 32 pages of text, 2 full-page color plates, 21 b/w plates and advertisements. AXIS was a short-lived (8 issues, 1935-1937) journal devoted to International Abstract Painting, Sculpture and Construction; and Editor Myfanwy Evans was ably assisted by her husband and publishing collaborator John Piper.

John Piper (1903-1992) was a British painter, print-maker, theatre and glass designer. He studied law (1921-26) and worked in his fathers solicitor's office before studying at the Royal College of Art. In the mid thirties, Piper turned to abstraction, after an influential visit to the modernist painting mecca, Paris. He joined the London Group in 1933 and the 'Seven and Five' group in 1934.
Along with the CIRCLE anthology, AXIS is one of the finest snapshots of the British Constructivist and Abstract Art movement that tried to find purchae in the barren soil of England before the start of World War II. My highest recommendation.
