CHARLES AND RAY EAMES A LASTING CONNECTION
The Herman Miller Furniture Company
The Herman Miller Furniture Company: CHARLES AND RAY EAMES: A LASTING CONNECTION [envelope title]. Zeeland, MI: The Herman Miller Furniture Company, n. d. [1978]. 8.5 x 8.75 die-cut printed envelope housing an 8.5 x 33.5 timeline [folded into quarters as issued] entitled "Chronology / Connections" / The Work of Charles and Ray Eames / 1940-1978." Promotional keepsake from Herman Miller showcasing the corporate relationship between the Eames Office and Herman Miller. Two corners of the die-cut envelope slightly torn, otherwise a fine copy. Rare.
This Timeline is a variant of the Timeline first presented in John and Marilyn Neuhart: CONNECTIONS: THE WORK OF CHARLES AND RAY EAMES. Los Angeles: UCLA Arts Council, 1976, printed by the Graphics Press. For this Timeline the photo of Ray and Charles has been substituted for a traditional husband/wife portrait that works particularly well when framed by the die-cut envelope. The text under the portrait has also been slightly revised from the 1976 UCLA Timeline. The same portrait was used in the Timeline published in EAMES DESIGN: THE WORK OF THE OFFICE OF CHARLES AND RAY EAMES. [New York: Abrams 1989].
Envelope features typeset expert witnessing by Roy F. Knight, Philip Morrison, Arthur Drexler, Peter Pearce, Ralph Caplan, Art Seidenbaum, Robert W. Duffy and Hugh De Pree.
Timeline features highlights of the prolific husband and wife team, including all of the Eames furniture, from the Saarinen Organic Furniture contest collaborations in 1940 to the Aluminum Group, Compact sofas, the beloved plywood designs and prototypes: LCW, DCM, DCW, ETW, screens, films, exhibitions, graphic design, etc.
This timeline is itself a reworking of an original Herman Miller promotion from ten years earlier: Eames Office/Herman Miller Furniture Company: A PICTORAL HISTORY OF HERMAN MILLER, INC. Los Angeles, Graphics Press, 1967.
A rare variant and an exceptional memento in the history of American modernism and the partnership between the Eames Office and Herman Miller.
Unmarked but from the library of A. Quincy Jones and Elaine K. Sewell Jones. Mrs. Jones worked as a publicist for Herman Miller and handled public relations for T&O, the short-lived Textiles & Objects Shop in New York City. The Shop was a Herman Miller store that showcased Alexander Girard fabrics, as well as objects Girard found on his international travels. Mr. Jones was an architect renowned for his work in the Case Study program, as well as his lengthy association with Joseph Eichler.
