DONALD DESKEY: DECORATIVE DESIGNS AND INTERIORS David A. Hanks with Jennifer Toher
David A. Hanks with Jennifer Toher: DONALD DESKEY: DECORATIVE DESIGNS AND INTERIORS. NYC: E.P. Dutton, 1987. First Edition. A very fine hardcover book in a very fine Dust jacket: a pristine copy. Interior unmakred and very clean. Out-of-print, never reissued and rather uncommon. A very desireable title.
8.75 x 11.25 hardcover book with 214 pages and over 200 period photographs and drawings selected from the Deskey Archives.Includes many examples of Deskey's mass-marketed designs in the fields of furniture, textiles, metalwork and glassware, as well as his stunning moderne interior design work.
Copies of this book rarely surface on the market. This is the definitive (and only) reference for one of the most important american designers of the 20th century.Hanks and his assistants had the collaboration of Deskey himself, and his archive of papers and drawings, at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York. This book covers his interiors and the furniture and decorative arts work that he produced for around fifty years. Jeffrey L.Meikle's essay covers the work of Deskey's office, which concentrated on the industrial designs: everything from Gleem toothpaste packaging to the modernist street lamps along the Henry Hudson Parkway. Also includes an Essay by Deskey, a designer's Chronology, List of Commissions and Index of designs (photographic record of most of Deskey's lamps, screens, and furniture).
A lavishly illustrated and important monograph on the preeminent modernist designer in the U.S. during the 1930s. An essential reference for all those interested in the decorative arts and industrial design of the twentieth century. For those especially interested in his lighting, this is a must. Did you know that Deskey used both Venini Lighting and Harris Strong Tiles in the design of his Marco Polo Room in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel?
