From the book: "At Home in Manhattan: Modern Decorative Arts, 1925 to the Depression" is the first exhibition in several decades to highlight the works of major American designers active in New York City during the late 1920s.
Including eighty-one objects by forty-seven designers, this exhibition sheds new light on a largely forgotten era of American design. In the past fifteen years several exhibitions in Europe and America have brought the so-called Art Deco style to public attention, and numerous histories of design movements of the 1920s have appeared.
These endeavors, however, have focused primarily on European developments, whereas American designs of the period remain largely unexamined...The objects in "At Home in Manhattan" provide valuable insights into a tremendously vital and experimental period in New York's history...
In essence, the objects assembled here tell us much about the ways American designers appropriated tradition, technology, modern art, and their changing environment into new and creative designs."
