10.5 x 14 saddle-stiched catalogue with 48 pages devoted to the
legendary art director who passed away a few months before this major
retrospective exhibition opened in the spring of 1972.
Remarks by a number of Brodovitch's colleagues: Richard Avedon, Irving
Penn, Art Kane, Bruce Davidson, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Brassai, Arnold Newman,
Eugene Berman and Diana Vreeland among others. Chronological biography.
Bibliography. This was the first exhibition to commemorate Brodovitch's
achievement and bring him more forcefully to our attention. Beautifully
realized by the craftsmen at the Drake Press.
Brodovitch is a legend in graphic design: during his 25-year tenure as
art director of Harper's Bazaar , he exerted tremendous influence
on the direction of design & photography. His use of assymetrical layouts,
white space, & dynamic imagery changed the nature of magazine design.
Exposed Americans to avant-garde artists by commissioning work from
Cassandre, Dali, Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray and other leading European
Avant-gardists.
