BRANCUSI EXHIBITION NOVEMBER 17 - DECEMBER 15 1926 Constantin Brancusi
Constantin Brancusi: BRANCUSI EXHIBITION NOVEMBER 17 - DECEMBER 15 1926 [wrapper title]. New York: The Brummer Gallery, 1926. Quarto. Printed wrappers. Unpaginated [96 pp]. Wrappers quite browned, especially tot he edges, lower right corner damaged, with small loss of paper affecting every page, but overall a decent copy, internally nice.
First edition. Illustrated with 33 photographs by Brancusi of his sculptures. With a foreword by Paul Morand and other contributions by Ezra Pound, Mina Loy, Carl Sandburg, Clive Bell, Henry McBride, Angus Wilson, Walter Pach, et al. From the library of Julien Levy. Levy first met Brancusi's agent Marcel Duchamp at this exhibition, and impressed the artist/dealer when Levy convinced his father to buy Bird In Space.
It was also at this exhibition that Levy first became aware of Mina Loy, whose poem Brancusi's Golden Bird was printed in the catalogue. Duchamp later introduced Levy to Loy in Paris, and her modest sensibilities, romantic lifestyle and her contacts within the arts made a long and lasting and profound impression on him. Levy married Loy's daughter Joella in 1927 and remained loyal to Mina Loy long after his divorce from Joella. A superb association copy, drawing together several seminal figures of 20th Century art.
