HISTOIRE DE LčOEIL NOUVELLE VERSION
Lord Auch [Georges Bataille]

PRESENTATION COPY FROM BATAILLE TO JULIEN LEVY

[Bataille, Georges]: HISTOIRE DE LčOEIL NOUVELLE VERSION by "Lord Auch" [pseudo]. Burgos, 1941 [Paris: Pauvert, 1951]. Small octavo. Gray printed wrappers. One of five hundred numbered copies printed for subscribers. Moderate scattered foxing, spine quite tanned, moderate tanning and foxing to the wrappers, otherwise a good or better copy.

First published pseudonymously in 1928 in a very small edition with illustrations by Andre Masson, THE STORY OF THE EYE was brought out in a new edition in 1947 with illustrations by Hans Bellmer, with textual revisions by the author. This edition, with the spurious place and date of publication, was published by Pauvert for subscribers only, and maintained the fictional Lord Auch as the author. Bataillečs name was not associated publicly with the book until 1967, five years after his death.

This copy of Bataillečs masterpiece of erotic surrealism is inscribed and signed by Bataille to American art dealer and champion of surrealism Julien Levy. Signed copies of any early edition of this book are not exactly common, and one with such a significant association is scarce.
