The Saul Bass Issue

Nanci Lyman (Editor): PRINT: AMERICA'S GRAPHIC DESIGN MAGAZINE. NYC: Volume 11, Number 6, May-June 1958. A near-fine original magazine with mild cover soiling. Interior unmarked and very clean. Cover design by Saul Bass.

8.5 x 11 face-stitched magazine with 64 pages of editorial content and advertising. Print was devoted to showcasing the best in American Graphic Design, circa 1958. For this goal, the Publishers used a wide variety of paper stocks and printing styles for each issue. Print from the mid-to-late 1950s remind me of Herbert Spencer's Typographica, but without the cultural pretensions of the English magazine. Print was meat and potatoes compared to Spencer's elegant souffles.
