PRINT June-July 1956
Lawrence Audrain (Editor): PRINT: AMERICA'S GRAPHIC DESIGN MAGAZINE.
NYC: William Edwin Rudge, Volume 10, Number 3, June-July 1956. A near-fine
original magazine with mild spine wear. Interior unmarked and very clean.
8.5 x 11 face-stitched magazine with 74 pages of editorial content and
advertising. Print was devoted to showcasing the best in American Graphic
Design, circa 1956. For this goal, the Publishers used a wide variety of
paper stocks and printing styles for each issue. Print from the mid-to-late
1950s remind me of Herbert Spencer's Typographica, but without the cultural
pretensions of the English magazine. Print was meat and potatoes compared
to Spencer's elegant souffles.
Contents for this vintage issue of Print magazine include:
- Otsu-e of Tokugawa by Karl Kup
- Transaction Design by Seymour Robins
- Typographic Excellence: type directors club awards: Saul Bass, leo
lionni, bradbury Thompson, Lester Beall, etc.
- Book Reviews
- Circles inthe Square; manhole design and street photography
- Columbia-- a new type face by Walter Mckay
- The Lion's Tail by L eo Lionni
