ANNUAL OF AMERICAN DESIGN 1931

American Union of Decorative Artists and Craftsmen
R. L. Leonard, and C. A. Glassgold (editors)

[American Union of Decorative Artists and Craftsmen] R. L. Leonard, and C. A. Glassgold (editors): ANNUAL OF AMERICAN DESIGN 1931. NYC: Ives Washburn, 1930. First edition. A very good to near-fine hardcover book in decorated and embossed (half-cloth) boards. White spine cloth is mildly soiled and boards a trifle dusty with one corner mildly frayed. Former owners signature on FEP, otherwise interior unmarked and very clean. because of the dodgy binding, this book rarely surfaces in collectible condition -- this is an exceptional copy of a very elusive title.

9.25 x 12.25 hardcover book with 176 pages and 300 b/w photographs. This volume is the most important vintage volume to examine American Industrial Design of the late 1920s into the early 1930s. No other volume comes close; not even the Studio Annuals for these years can hold a candle to this stunning production.

Acanthus Press published a facsimile of this book in 1992 as part of their noble Twentieth Century Landmarks in Design Series. The reprint is a strangely uncommon title that fails to do justice to the halftone engraving and tonal range of the 1930 edition. This book must truly be seen to be believed, from the Art Moderne design of the book and the binding, to the stellar line-up of artisans who contributed original essays. But don't take my word for it, take a peek at the contents:
